Tottenham continue to be the pundits' choice to win the Premier League title

Former Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas has tipped Tottenham to lift the Premier League trophy this season under Jose Mourinho.

Spurs have made a fantastic start to the season, having won five of their opening eight matches.

The North London outfit currently sit third in the league table, a point behind leaders Tottenham and Leicester City, with Mourinho having made a number of quality signings during the summer transfer window.

Jenas revealed that he believes Mourinho will be relishing the challenge of achieving domestic success this season as Spurs aim to win their first top-flight crown since 1961.

"He knows with all the jobs that he's had and everything that he's done, if he can do something ridiculous here it puts him into the stratosphere," he told BBC podcast The Friday Football Social .

"He knows he has the capability of winning the league with this team, and he also knows that if he does manage to do it, even though he knows it's going to be tough, that it will be difficult to surpass what he's achieved in English football with regards to winning the league with Chelsea.

"It's a scary thought and I can already see the look on his face if he manages to do it."

His comments were echoed by former Leicester midfielder Robbie Savage, who praised Tottenham's all-round strength and highlighted Mourinho's impact on the current squad.

Returning legend Gareth Bale, midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and full-back Matt Doherty were among the players to bolster the club's ranks during the summer.

"When Jose said he finished second with 81 points at Manchester United that it was a great achievement, one of the best," Savage added.

"You look at that now and you're thinking yeah, it was probably right. We all laughed at him at that point.

"But now, you're thinking with that squad he's created, a world class front three, on their day as good as anybody.

"We know Jose can be defensively minded so I think that team has everything, and the manager's proven. I honestly think they can win it this season."

It continues a theme of a number of high-profile pundits favouring Spurs in what could be a devilishly tight title race.

Liverpool's numerous defensive injuries leave considerable question marks over Jurgen Klopp's side, while Manchester City under Pep Guardiola don't look quite the complete attacking team of previous seasons.

Chelsea have been strong but with doubts over Frank Lampard's experience in this sort of position as a manager, if Leicester City have quite the squad to last the pace, and Arsenal and Manchester United still off the pace, why not Spurs?

Sky Sports' Paul Merson believes Tottenham has the capabilities to mount a title challenge, Spurs hero Jurgen Klinsmann has backed his former club while this week former Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink declared Mourinho's side were his pick.

Jamie Carragher has not been so enthusiastic, claiming the self-belief isn't quite there with this squad, but did concede that a Tottenham title win would be great for the Premier League.
