Tottenham consider Nuno Espirito Santo's future as Paulo Fonseca moves into frame

Tottenham are considering the future of Nuno Espirito Santo - and could replace him with one-time target Paulo Fonseca.

The north Londoners have been rocked by the backlash against the former Wolves boss in the wake of their 3-0 home surrender to Manchester United.

Spurs have lost three of their last four games in all competitions while Nuno has lost the confidence of the club’s fans, several members of the squad and, crucially, England captain Harry Kane.

Supporters chanted: ‘We want Nuno out’ on Saturday while the Portuguese’s decision to take off Lucas Moura was also openly booed.

Should Spurs chairman Daniel Levy wield the axe it would be the earliest the club has sacked a new boss since Jacques Santini went after 11 league games in November 2005.

Back then the Frenchman was undefeated in his first six games before losing four out of five.

Nuno pulled off wins over Manchester City, Wolves and Watford in his first three league games, but has since lost five of the subsequent seven.

Fonseca, among the favourites for the Newcastle job, could find himself back in the frame for Spurs should they wield the axe.

The Magpies have yet to decide on a new manager, despite sacking Steve Bruce on October 20.

Saturday’s events could see the option of Fonseca taken out of their hands.

Tottenham fans are angry that the club failed to register a shot on target in a home league game for the first time in eight years.

They are particularly frustrated because the appointment of Nuno runs counter to chairman Daniel Levy’s insistence earlier this year that after sacking Jose Mourinho he would seek out a replacement in keeping with the club’s attacking DNA.

Instead, Nuno’s safety-first tactics on Saturday were shredded by United legend Roy Keane who, on Sky Sports, blasted the current north Londoners as “boring to watch”, lacking in courage and “gutless”.

Spurs had initially been insistent when Nuno parted company with Wolves last season that his style of play did not suit them.

They turned to him at the start of July after being rejected by a string of higher-profile bosses including Antonio Conte, Leicester’s Brendan Rodgers and Ajax boss Erik Ten Hag.
