Tottenham confirm Steven Bergwijn shirt number as new signing takes no23 worn by Christian Eriksen

Steven Bergwijn will inherit Christian Eriksen's old squad number at Tottenham.

The Dutch winger completed his move from Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven to north London on Wednesday morning, with Spurs paying £25million plus a further £1.7m in add-ons.

Bergwijn has signed a contract until 2025 and follows Benfica loanee Gedson Fernandes as another new arrival at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with the club also converting Giovani Lo Celso's loan from Real Betis into a permanent arrangement.

Tottenham want their new man to help replace Eriksen, who ended his six-and-a-half year spell with the club on Tuesday by moving to Serie A giants Inter Milan for a £17m fee.

That is perhaps further underlined by the fact that Spurs have chosen to hand Bergwijn Eriksen's old no23 shirt, which had been vacant for less than 24 hours.

Sol Campbell and Michael Carrick are among the other players to have worn that number for Tottenham.

Bergwijn - who has seven senior international caps for the Netherlands - could make his debut on Sunday as Jose Mourinho's side face Manchester City in the Premier League.
