Tottenham confirm club legend Jimmy Greaves taken to hospital for treatment

Tottenham have confirmed that club legend Jimmy Greaves is currently being treated in hospital.

The 80-year-old, who was part of England's victorious 1966 World Cup squad, is the greatest goalscorer in English football history and Tottenham's record marksman.

The Premier League club said in a statement late on Tuesday night: "We can confirm that our record goalscorer Jimmy Greaves is currently being treated in hospital.

"We are in touch with his family and will provide further updates in due course.

"Everybody at the Club sends their best wishes to Jimmy and his family."

Greaves was admitted to hospital near his home in Chelmsford, Essex. There is no suggestion at this stage that he had been suffering from symptoms related to coronavirus.

He suffered a severe stroke in May 2015, which left him wheelchair-bound.

Greaves' agent posted a message on the Spurs and England icon's Facebook page on Tuesday night.

It read: "I can confirm Jimmy is in hospital tonight. We will release a statement tomorrow regarding the condition, please please respect the family and if you are press do not phone his home tonight.

"His current condition and prognosis will be revealed mid morning tomorrow.

"If you love him like I do, have good thoughts for him as you go to bed tonight.

"He is my biggest hero of all time and as lots of you know I kind of lived your dream by becoming best friends with him for over 20 years.

"He has endured a very difficult five years since his massive stroke in 2015 so spare some time to think of my lovely mate tonight. And watch this space for an update tomorrow."

Greaves, who played for Tottenham from 1961-70, still hold the club's all-time goals record and is England's fourth highest scorer (PA)

Greaves scored a club record 266 goals in 379 appearances for Tottenham between 1961 and 1970, winning two FA Cups and the Cup Winners' Cup at White Hart Lane.

He has scored more goals in the history of English top-flight football (357) than anyone else, having also played for Chelsea and West Ham.

Greaves is England's fourth highest scorer with 44 goals from 57 appearances, and was a member of the 1966 World Cup-winning squad.

Having started all three of England's group games in the home World Cup finals, he suffered heartbreak when he lost his place through injury to Geoff Hurst, who would famously go on to score a hat-trick in the final.

Greaves has scored six hat-tricks for England - more than any other Three Lions player.

Born in Manor Park in 1940, Greaves began his career at Chelsea, scoring 124 league goals for them between 1957 and 1961.

He had a brief spell at Italian club AC Milan before returning to England the same year to join Tottenham.

Greaves later played for Brentwood and Chelmsford City.

After his playing career ended, he went on to a successful career in broadcasting, presenting alongside former Liverpool player Ian St John in the hugely popular 'Saint and Greavsie' Saturday lunchtime football show.
