Tottenham complete unexpected £300k deal with Leeds United

The January transfer window has been a quiet period for Tottenham and, with just over a week remaining in the window, it appears mid-season dealings are not a priority.

Jose Mourinho's side have been in fine form this season, standing in a good position in the quest to secure a return to Champions League football.

The partnership between Harry Kane and Son Heung-min has been a stand-out feature and everything appears to be good on the field.

That may perhaps explain a rather unexpected deal that has been completed this week, with Leeds United paying for a rather unorthodox addition from Tottenham.

Leeds' reporter Phil Hay has stated the Whites have secured a replacement pitch for the remainder of the season, paying £300k to Spurs for the surface.

The north London side were growing the turf for their own use further down the line but approved a sale to their Premier League rivals.

Elland Road's new pitch will be in place for Leeds' next Premier League home match against Everton at the start of February and Spurs will have a reunion of sorts in May, when the two sides collide late in the season.

Leeds even went as far as issuing an announcement on the signing, of sorts, with the club's Head of Facilities stating: “We have been working closely with Hewitt Sportsturf on a proposal to fully reconstruct the Elland Road pitch this summer.

“However, after the recent heavy rainfall and snow in Leeds, it became evident that the current system was unable to cope and as a result was struggling to retain sufficient stability in the top surface.

“We reviewed all options available and agreed the best possible solution was to remove the top surface and install the hybrid turf system HT Pro as seen at Tottenham Hotspur and Swansea City.”
