Tottenham complete transfer for talented National League youngster for undisclosed fee

Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of talented defender Charlie Sayers from Southend United for an undisclosed fee.

Making his debut for the Shrimpers in October, the 17-year-old made six appearances for the National League side in total prior to joining Spurs' academy.

The left-back arrives at Tottenham as a second-year Under-18s player and he joins the club's scholarship programme from Southend following a trial period in N17.

Sayers has featured for Spurs' Under-18s in their past two games against Fulham and Crystal Palace, notably wearing the captain's armband for the side at the weekend in their 3-0 defeat against the Eagles.

Signing another talented player as they plan for the future, Sayers will be hoping to carry on his recent progress and force his way into the Tottenham first team in the years ahead.

Speaking to Southend's official website about the youngster, Shrimpers head coach Kevin Maher hailed Sayers following his departure from Roots Hall.

"For a young lad to get the opportunity to go to Tottenham, you can’t stand in his way," he explained.

"He broke into the team this season and to play at 17 in a really tough league shows a lot of character. He’s got a mature head on him for his young age and hopefully he can take that forward.

"Tottenham is a brilliant football club and they’ve got some really good people there that I know well. He’ll be looked after and coached very well and it’s up to him now to take the opportunity.

"He’s a great lad and we wish him all the very best and hope to see him go on and have a great career."

Sayers will be hoping to be involved for the Under-18s once again on Saturday when they host Leicester City at Hotspur Way.
