Tottenham complete Sergio Reguilon transfer in £27million move from Real Madrid

Tottenham have completed the signing of defender Sergio Reguilon after beating off competition from Man Utd.

The left-back moves to Spurs from Real Madrid in a permanent deal worth £27million.

Reguilon had held talks with United over a potential transfer but ultimately opted to join Jose Mourinho's side instead, with United unable to agree terms with the Spanish champions.

The 23-year-old was surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu despite an impressive season on loan at Europa League winners Sevilla.

Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane considered both Marcelo and Ferland Mendy ahead of Reguilon in the pecking order though and was happy to allow his third-choice option to leave.

Zidane said on Saturday: "We must congratulate Reguilon on the season he had [at Sevilla].

"We have two players per position and I already have two full-backs. I wish him all the best because he had a good season in Seville and he deserves to be at Tottenham."

Arsenal and Chelsea were among the clubs to also show an interest in the Spaniard, who has just been rewarded for his fine form with a first international cap.

Reguilon made 38 appearances for Sevilla last season in all competitions, scoring three goals in the process.

He played a key role in their Europa League success, defeating Inter Milan in the final.

Spurs already have Ben Davies as well as talented youngster Ryan Sessegnon available at left-back - although Sessegnon prefers to play further forwards.

Danny Rose is also still on the club's books but is expected to leave before the transfer deadline.

Reguilon follows Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Matt Doherty through the door at Spurs with another Real Madrid star to follow.

Gareth Bale is also set to join on loan for the season with announcement of a deal imminent, while Mourinho is also targeting further additions in attack.
