Tottenham complete defender transfer after Chelsea decision

Tottenham have signed teenage defender Marcel Lavinier after he was released by Chelsea at the end of last season.

The 19-year-old full-back came through Chelsea's youth academy and was a regular for the Blues' Under-18 side.

But after his contract expired at the end of the 2019/20 season, Spurs moved to snap up the promising defender on a deal until the end of the current campaign.

He has since played for Spurs' Under-23 side in the Premier League 2, starting in the 2-1 win against Southampton on Saturday.

Transfer Deadline Day - deals from around the league so far

The defender will now try to emulate the likes of Japhet Tanganga who broke into Jose Mourinho's first team set-up last year after starring for the youth side.

On social media, Lavinier confirmed the move with a statement on his Instagram account.

The teenager wrote: "Delighted to have signed for @spursofficial in the next step of my career.

"Very big club with very high ambitions. Grateful for this opportunity and I can’t wait to get started!"
