Tottenham close in on £47m Cristian Romero signing as Atalanta outline transfer plan

Tottenham are reportedly closing in on signing Atalanta defender Cristian Romero, with talks over a £47million deal planned.

football.london reported earlier in the week that Spurs were in advanced talks for both Romero and his team-mate Pierluigi Gollini, as the north Londoners prepare to raid the Serie A club.

New managing director of football Fabio Paratici is understood to have a very strong interest in Romero, who he signed for Juventus back in 2019.

The Argentina international is believed to be the leading contender for defensive targets as Paratici looks to provide Nuno Espirito Santo with a competitive squad going into the new season.

Now, according to Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano, Spurs have agreed personal terms with Romero over a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and the fee is the only thing needing to be sorted out.

Atalanta are thought to have placed a €55m (£47m) price tag on Romero and are already planning for life without the 23-year-old.

Romano also says that the Italian club are interested in signing Lille central defender Sven Botman, who is 'still on the list' for Atalanta if Romero is to leave for Spurs.

Tottenham will be hoping Romero will be their player by the time they face Manchester City in the opening weekend of the Premier League season in mid-August.

Spurs boss Espirito Santo recently revealed the talks he has held with Paratici over the rebuild that needs to happen in N17.

He said: "We've been talking - not only me and Fabio. Steve (Hitchen) also.

"We are aware there's a lot of work to be done, but at the same time it’s hard work because to improve our squad, the quality we have, the talent we have, is not easy, and we have to find the right players who can help us, but it’s been good work and on a daily basis each moment we have the chance to speak, to share opinions - me, Fabio, Steve."
