Tottenham clash with Leicester City set to go ahead as Brendan Rodgers speaks out

Tottenham have now been out of action for over a week after a Covid outbreak meant matches with Rennes and Brighton were postponed.

Eight first-team players tested positive for the virus during last week, meaning Antonio Conte's side were able to get their Europa Conference League and Premier League clashes called off.

With midweek fixtures on the cards this week, doubt remains whether or not the trip to Leicester City will go ahead on Thursday night, as the Foxes face an outbreak of their own.

In the build up to their match with Rennes, Conte spoke of how important it was to put the player's health, and the health of their families, first.

"The situation is serious. Everyday we are having positives," the Italian told a press conference last week.

"I think that it is not right for everyone because we have family and we have contact with them when we come back home we have contact with our family.

"There are situations that made me very, very upset, very upset because the situation is serious and it is contagious and there is a big infection and now for sure we are a bit scared because tomorrow we don’t know what happens."

For Leicester, they had to make do without seven with an unspecified amount missing due to coronavirus.

Despite that, they managed to comfortably beat Newcastle 4-0 at the King Power Stadium. After the match, Brendan Rodgers revealed that he still expects the clash on Thursday night to go ahead.

"I can’t give the number of Covid cases," said Rodgers.

"It’s medical and something I don’t need to declare to you but we have a host of players out, a mixture of Covid and of course players that aren’t well, so that’s as much as I can say.

"I’ve not heard anything that the Spurs game is not on, and obviously with the European decision as well, with Tottenham not being able to play (UEFA have said their meeting with Rennes will not be rescheduled), I suspect the game would go ahead. We haven’t been told anything otherwise.

"We have been taking all the precautions – wearing masks, reinforcing hygiene issues, safe distancing. It’s just really unfortunate we’ve seen a number of cases and I’m sure we’ll continue to see that over this winter period.

"We are lucky we have a training ground that allows us to work safely and hopefully we can get some of these players back and maybe not have so many more cases in future."
