Tottenham charged by Uefa over pitch invader at new stadium during Man City Champions League tie

Tottenham have been charged by Uefa after a supporter invaded the pitch during the Champions League match against Manchester City.

Standard Sport understands that Tottenham are set to hand out the new stadium's first lifetime ban to the pitch invader, who ran onto the pitch in the second-half last night Champions League quarter-final first leg at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The man was confronted by City’s Fabian Delph before being removed by stewards, leaving Mauricio Pochettino furious.

The man, dressed in all black, appeared in the closing moments of the game before the Spurs boss intervened by running onto the pitch.

Pochettino was captured by TV cameras shaking his head disapprovingly as he walked off, with the incident coming in just the second game at the clubs’ new stadium.

Referee Bjorn Kuipers then prevented Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen from getting involved, before the fan was escorted off the pitch by a match steward.

Uefa confirmed Spurs would be facing action in a statement released on Thursday afternoon.

It read: "Disciplinary proceedings have been opened following the Uefa Champions League quarter-final first leg match between Tottenham Hotspur FC and Manchester City FC (1-0), played on 9 April in England."

Spurs won the match 1-0 with a goal from Heung-min Son and the return leg takes place next Wednesday.

Uefa has imposed fines of 5,000 euros (about £4,300) this season on clubs for a first offense of pitch invasion.

Both cases will be judged on May 16 by Uefa's disciplinary panel.
