Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy takes up new position after Man Utd chief Ed Woodward's decision

Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has been selected to represent the Premier League at the European Club Association (ECA), as confirmed by the committee’s official Twitter account.

Manchester United’s executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward, stepped down in April following the club’s decision to sign up for the proposed European Super League – a competition that was quickly met with protest worldwide.

As per The Athletic, Levy and Manchester City CEO Ferran Soriano were both in the running to replace Woodward on the board.

However, after the Tottenham chairman gained support from Premier League clubs, including United, Liverpool and Arsenal, Soriano withdrew from the race, but he will remain as an observer to the board until another seat becomes available.

The ECA wrote on Twitter: “Congratulations to Daniel Levy, Chairman, @SpursOfficial who has been elected to the ECA executive board #ECAGeneralAssembly.”

Although Tottenham also agreed to quit the ECA after committing to join the Super League in April, the nine clubs who subsequently withdrew from the competition within days of its announcement were reinstated into the ECA – Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus remain committed to the new format, but are unlikely to obtain any immediate support.

Levy, who has been in charge of Spurs for nearly 20 years now, has been heavily criticised by his supporters at times, but is also well known for his astute business and has shown how a football club can operate under a more limited budget.

He will be joined by Atletico Madrid chief executive Miguel Angel Mill and Inter Milan’s Alessandro Antonello on the board.

Levy also held a position on UEFA’s Professional Football Strategy Council, although it is unclear whether he will continue in this role now that he has joined the ECA board.
