Tottenham can repeat Hojbjerg transfer trick to land their own Virgil van Dijk as 'talks opened'

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly in talks with Southampton over the potential signing of Danish defender Jannik Vestergaard this summer.

According to the Daily Mail, Spurs are interested in the former Borussia Monchengladbach centre-back and have apparently already opened talks with the Saints regarding the possibility of bringing him to the club this summer.

His contract on the south coast expires next summer, with the 28-year-old reportedly perceived as an attractive option as a result.

Vestergaard has impressed at St Mary’s recently despite a rocky start to his Southampton career.

Signed in 2018 from Borussia Monchengladbach for a reported fee of £18million, he played just 25 times in all competitions in his first season - that number dropping to 21 outings during the 2019/20 campaign.

He became a key member of the squad under Ralph Hasenhuttl last season, though, appearing 32 times and scoring three goals despite the Saints finishing in a disappointing 15th position.

His form certainly caught the eye and Martin Keown compared the Dane to Liverpool title winner Virgil van Dijk after the Saints beat the 2019/20 Premier League champions in January.

“It’s his passing. It reminds me of van Dijk," Keown told talkSPORT.

“I call it a stationary platform. When you don’t run with the ball you stop and when you look at those two, the way they ping balls, the way he threads things into midfield, the challenges, he’s a big man.”

Should Spurs make a move, then they would be repeating a transfer trick that saw Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg swap St Mary’s for the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last summer.

The fellow Dane had just one year left on his deal with Southampton, allowing Spurs to swoop for a reported £15m move.

The links to Vestergaard come amid uncertainty at the centre-back position currently at the club, with Spurs keen to sign two central defenders this summer.

Toby Alderweireld has apparently requested to leave the club this summer, whilst Davinson Sanchez only made 17 Premier League starts last season and Juan Foyth's permanent move to Villarreal has been confirmed.
