Tottenham braced as Atletico prepare to launch bid for England international

Tottenham defender Kieran Trippier could be closing in on a move to Spain with reports suggesting Atletico Madrid are ramping up their efforts to sign the right-back.

The England international looks set to leave the Champions League finalists this summer after spending the past four seasons in North London.

It looked like the 28-year-old may have been on his way to Italy, with both Napoli and Juventus previously suggested as potential destinations.

A deal to join either side, however, fell through, paving the way for Atletico to make a move for Trippier, who they see as a replacement for the long-serving Juanfran.

The Sun claim the La Liga giants have drawn up a two-man shortlist to replace the Spanish international, with Trippier joining Paris Saint-Germain's Thomas Meunier in being placed under consideration.

Any deal for the England international would cost Diego Simeone's men £25m, with Tottenham making a £22.5m profit on the full-back.

Trippier joined Spurs from Burnley in the summer of 2015 and spent the first two seasons as back-up to Kyle Walker.

Once Walker left for Manchester City in 2017, Trippier was handed the chance to become the north Londoner's first-choice right-back.

The 28-year-old shone for England at the World Cup in Russia a year later and netted in their semi-final defeat to Croatia, but has since seen his form slide.

The right-back endured a mixed campaign for Tottenham, though was still able to feature for the North Londoners as they reached the Champions League final, which they lost 2-0 to Liverpool .

After that near-miss, Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly planning a summer overhaul and Trippier is one of eight players who have been made available for transfer.

Fellow defenders Danny Rose, Serge Aurier and Cameron Carter-Vickers are also on the list, as are Victor Wanyama, Josh Onomah, Marcus Edwards and Vincent Janssen.
