Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino reacts to Son Heung-min red card following Andre Gomes injury

Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has described Martin Atkinson's decision to dismiss Son Heung-min as "unbelievable".

The Spurs forward was sent off after his foul on Everton's Andre Gomes, who suffered a serious ankle injury following the challenge.

Son was initially shown a yellow card for the tackle before the referee upgraded it to red after seeing the extent of the injury suffered by the Portuguese midfielder as well as receiving advice through his earpiece.

Gomes was immediately rushed to Aintree hospital following the incident, and a club statement released on Sunday night confirmed the 26-year-old will undergo surgery on Monday after suffering a fracture dislocation to his right ankle.

And despite showing sympathy to Gomes, the Argentine coach said: "It is unbelievable he received the red card. If it’s not up to the refs then we are in a big mess, it is going to change the spirit of football.

"VAR changed the game because it changed the yellow card to red. It is creating a big mess. It was very, very tough, completely unfair for Son, completely unfair for Tottenham and very difficult to understand this type of situation.

"It was clear it was never the intention of Son to create the situation afterwards.

"I don’t know if we will appeal the red card, I don’t know if it is possible, but will it change it, because what we can’t change all that happened after the red card."

Cenk Tosun rescued a point for Everton with his stoppage time header which cancelled out Dele Alli's opener as the game finished 1-1.

An official statement from the Premier League read: "The red card for Son was for endangering the safety of a player which happened as a consequence of his initial challenge."
