Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino questions penalty decision against Liverpool

Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has claimed the decision to award Liverpool a late penalty at Anfield on Sunday was "very soft".

The Reds regained their six-point lead at the summit of the Premier League despite falling behind to Harry Kane's opener inside the first minute.

Liverpool fought back and responded well to the goal from the England captain by forcing deputy goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga into a string of saves before Jordan Henderson levelled up in the second half.

The league leaders were given a late spot-kick when Serge Aurier caught Sadio Mane on the calf inside the penalty area.

Mohamed Salah slammed the ball past Gazzaniga to extend the Reds' unbeaten Anfield record in the Premier League to 45 games and further their lead over Manchester City.

However, Pochettino was unhappy with the awarding of a penalty from referee Anthony Taylor but stopped short of being too critical after the game.

He said: "It is an action that I don’t need to complain [about]. I need to accept the decision from the referee and the VAR.

"Technically, maybe it is penalty because there is a contact but to be honest the ball is going away. It is very soft. It is an action [from Aurier] that happens in football.

"I think I am happy with [Aurier]. Today he is not happy and no one is happy.

"Normally you feel the penalty and you feel you are guilty but it is not like this. I have nothing to say about him and our squad. I am behind our squad supporting them.

"We have 29 players. After five years and a half at Tottenham, I think it is a moment to be all together and show our support."

Liverpool return to action when they host Arsenal in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night before resuming Premier League duty away at Aston Villa on Saturday.
