Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino in ‘no doubt’ Dele Alli will get back to his best

Mauricio Pochettino says he and the rest of the Tottenham coaching staff will give Dele Alli the ‘tools and platform’ to get back to his best.

Alli made only his third appearance of the season against Bayern following a hamstring problem and the 23-year-old has been left out of a second consecutive England squad.

But Pochettino played down the midfielder's form and promised he would get back to his best.

"There's nothing wrong. You need to understand that football is about form, about some not so good periods. Dele only needs time to recover his best performance. We're going to help him, provide the tools and platform for him to recover.

“There's no doubt he's going to recovery. He's in a tough period but we need him, he's a very important player for us. In time, we're going to recover the best Dele Alli."

England boss Gareth Southgate referred a change in Alli’s position when asked during Thursday’s press conference, but backed the midfielder to get back into the squad.

"He played a lot deeper last year. I still think there were signs the other night of him getting into the areas where he is really dangerous, those runs into the box that he makes, the high pressing. All that he brings to the team. So, I think [there are] a few things for him to contend with but he’s a fighter, I know he’ll fight his way back into our group.

"He’s got a fight on his hands at his club, it’s a strong squad now, so there’s competition for places depending on the system that they play, but he’s an asset and we all know that and I know his mentality and drive will be to get back in."
