Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho takes aim at Manchester United over Bruno Fernandes transfer

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho has appeared to take a cheeky swipe at Bruno Fernandes and his penalty record since joining Manchester United.

Fernandes has been one of the standout stars in the Premier League since he arrived at Old Trafford from Sporting Lisbon back in January.

And United secured a place in the Champions League for next season thanks to a 2-0 win away at Leicester last weekend, thanks to a penalty from Fernandes and a late strike from Jesse Lingard.

Since arriving six months ago Fernandes has netted six penalties in all competitions for United as they broke the Premier League record for the most spot-kicks won in a single season.

Alasdair Gold's Spurs season debrief and the transfer window

The Old Trafford club have this season beaten the record previously held by Leicester City from the 2015/16 season and Crystal Palace from the 2004/05 campaign.

And speaking to Record, Mourinho appeared to aim a sly dig at the 25-year-old by referencing the amount of penalties he has taken for United this season.

He said: “Bruno came in, was fit, played very well, improved the United team and also proved to be a great penalty taker, one of the best in the world, because he had about 20 to score."

It is not the first time the Spurs boss has referenced the amount of penalties United have been awarded this season.

Speaking after his side’s game with his old club back in June, he said. “We knew that we could have a penalty against and we were very careful with it.

“We know Manchester United has an incredible record with penalties given this season and we knew that everything in the box was very dangerous for us.

“We had to be very cautious, we were prepared to block every shot with hands behind the body. We knew it could happen.

“I think the first penalty the referee Jonathan made this decision, which I admit is difficult for referees. Then the VAR is a different story.

“Referees can make mistakes but I don’t think VAR should make mistakes. Then the second penalty is incredible for me. Its a foul on Serge Aurier that should kill the situation.

“Then it’s a foul in the box and I feel when VAR goes for simulation the player should be exposed and get a yellow card. But that didn’t happen.

“I feel really upset with these two decisions but that’s how it is.”
