Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho latest admirer of Leeds United's Kalvin Phillips

Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho is keeping tabs on Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips ahead of a possible summer swoop for the highly-rated midfielder.

The Londoners were among a number of clubs interested in Phillips last summer before the 24-year-old put pen to paper on a new five-year contract.

The Spurs boss is desperate for a new midfield anchorman and, according to Football Insider, he plans to make him a priority target if Leeds fail to gain promotion to the top flight this season.

The Elland Road club turned down a number of offers in the region of £20 million for their star man before the start of this season and Mourinho knows if Marcelo Bielsa's men can go one step further this time round then the likelihood of landing Phillips will be slim.

The midfielder has expressed his desire to play Premier League football with his beloved Leeds and Bielsa believes Phillips is an integral part of any further success. However, should United fail to gain promotion, a host of clubs including Manchester United, are expected to test the club's resolve.

Phillips has been tipped as a future England player and has started all but four of United's Championship matches this season. His recent return to the starting line-up after a three-game suspension has seen Leeds pick up four points from their last two games and open up a three-point lead on Fulham in third place.
