Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho heaps praise on Son, Kane and Lo Celso following Southampton win

Jose Mourinho, the Tottenham Hotspur boss, has heaped praise on the shoulders of Son Heung-min and Harry Kane after their eye-catching displays in Spurs' 5-2 victory over Southampton at St Mary's on Sunday lunchtime.

The duo delivered, arguably, their best performances in a Tottenham shirt as Son scored four of Spurs' five goals, with Kane netting the fifth. Kane, though, played a direct hand in all four of Son's goals, claiming an assist for each of them with some outstanding passes.

It was a deadly performance from the duo, who will no doubt get even better once new signing Gareth Bale gets up to speed back in North London.

Gareth Bale's brilliant welcome to Tottenham

Whilst Son and Kane most certainly lapped up the praise from Mourinho after the game, the Spurs boss also praised his side's collective showing in the second half after a flat opening 45 minutes on the South Coast.

“The second-half was really, really good," Mourinho told BT Sport after the full-time whistle. "We didn’t start bad.

"Of course, the goal was ruled out for offside, but we started quite well. But then we lost control of the game in the first-half, their strikers caused us problems, we couldn’t control them very well.

"We conceded a goal that was a replica of the goal we conceded last season here with a long ball behind our defence and [Danny] Ings winning that duel.

"Second-half, great dynamic, good impact from the two subs, very similar to Plovdiv. I love the players from the bench with the attitude to help the team, and I think Gio [Lo Celso] and [Erik] Lamela did that.

"Then Sonny [Son Heung-min] was on fire and for me, Harry Kane, was Man of the Match. What he did for the team, sometimes people think strikers have to score goals, but sometimes strikers need to give big dynamic to the attacking organisation and with him dropping back and collecting the ball in between the lines for Sonny to attack spaces, we created problems they couldn’t resolve."

Half time saw Mourinho make a tactical substitution in the hope of swinging the game in his team's favour, replacing Frenchman Tanguy Ndombele, who claimed his first Premier League start of the season, with Giovani Lo Celso.

Explaining why he made that change at half time, the Spurs boss continued: “Football is not just about one action. To be honest, there were three or four players with yellow cards, for us, only Tanguy [Ndombele].

"I felt in the second-half, the game was a little bit broken. I changed Tanguy because I knew Gio would give us a little bit more because he’s in a better condition than Tanguy.”
