Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho declares Daniel Levy a deal-making 'genius' just before £11m fee agreed for Joe Rodon

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has praised his "genius" chairman Daniel Levy as he declared himself delighted with the club's transfer work that will see them add Swansea defender Joe Rodon late on.

A deal for the Wales defender was agreed at the eleventh hour, adding to a series of strong signings for the Premier League club during the window, which included Gareth Bale. The move has yet to be officially confirmed at the time of writing.

Rodon had been the subject of intense negotiations between the two clubs for a number of days, with an initial £11m fee eventually agreed. The deal could eventually rise to £15m with add-ons. Swansea had initially been holding out for £18m.

Speaking at a press conference earlier on Friday, Mourinho said: "It's a great occasion because everything closes today including the EFL clubs. I have to thank everyone involved, my boss Mr Levy.

"Mr Levy showed once again that when he's involved he's a genius in the way he makes deals happen.

"Now it's for me and my staff and players to have a really good season."

Asked before the signing of Rodon was confirmed if he had got all of his transfer targets, Mourinho said: "Almost, but with us coaches it's always about almost. Unless you're a privileged guy in a team that doesn't respect financial fair play.

"More than I was expecting. Even with my analysis I didn't expect us to go as far we did. I can only praise the board and I can see in the players that feeling I love that they are happy but worried.

"They can see the squad getting better but they're worried about whether they'll play or not. That's the feeling I love to see and big clubs have that."
