Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho accused of signing Joe Hart to make a point to rival Pep Guardiola

Danny Mills believes Jose Mourinho may have signed Joe Hart in a bid to prove a point to Pep Guardiola.

Hart signed a two-year deal with Spurs last week after leaving Burnley when his contract expired on June 30.

The 33-year-old fell out of favour at Manchester City after Guardiola arrived in 2016, with loan spells at Torino and West Ham before a 2018 move to Burnley.

The former Shrewsbury Town man then lost his Burnley place to Tom Heaton midway through his first season at the club and spent last season on the bench behind Nick Pope.

And although eyebrows were raised when Hart completed his move to the north London club, Mills believes the Spurs boss could be out to prove a point.

“Without a doubt that is a smart signing,” he told Football Insider when asked if he believed Hart to be a clever piece of business by Spurs.

“I said all along that I wanted him at Leeds. He is only 33 so he could have six years left. Goalkeepers easily go into their late thirties.

“He is unbelievably fit because he looks after himself incredibly well.

“When he first came into Manchester City he was working with Eric Steele, an incredible goalkeeper coach who has brought on David De Gea as well.

“Pep decided to bin him for no reason whatsoever. You wonder if that is Mourinho going, ‘Well, you did not want him but I will have him and prove a point.’

“Hart’s work rate and dedication is incredible. He also adds to the home grown quota which is a bonus.”
