Tottenham blow as Cristian Romero suffers hamstring injury on Argentina duty ahead of Leeds clash

Tottenham are sweating on the fitness of Cristian Romero after the defender suffered a suspected hamstring injury in Argentina’s 0-0 draw with Brazil on Tuesday night.

Romero will be assessed when he returns to the club on Thursday but is likely to be a major doubt for the visit of Leeds on Sunday afternoon.

The centre-half, who has started Antonio Conte’s first two games in charge as a part of a back three, pulled up in the second half and was replaced as Argentina booked their place at the World Cup with a point.

Romero’s team-mate Giovani Lo Celso also started against Brazil in San Juan, while Emerson Royal was an unused substitute for the visitors.

Heung-min Son, who scored for South Korea against Iraq on Tuesday night, is also expected back at Spurs on Thursday but Harry Kane will train under Conte on Wednesday, having watched Tuesday’s session.

Kane scored seven times in a little over 120 minutes for England against Albania and San Marino and will hope to kickstart his faltering club season at the weekend.

The majority of Spurs’ other internationals will also resume training on Wednesday, as the new manager looks to establish his philosophy and improve the squad’s fitness.

Ryan Sessegnon has trained this week after recovering from a hamstring injury which has ruled him out since the September international break, while Bryan Gil also rejoined the group.
