Tottenham behind the scenes: Jose Mourinho's best team, summer transfer budget and Coutinho deal

The return of Premier League football is edging closer and with it Tottenham Hotspur can still salvage the 2019/20 season.

June 17 is the date pencilled in for football in England to resume, although Spurs won't be in action for another few days when they host Manchester United in a mouth-watering clash in north London.

That game could have a huge say as to who claims a top-five finish and thus qualifies for next season's Champions League group phase.

And with Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Moussa Sissoko now fully fit, head coach Jose Mourinho will likely fancy his chances of ending the campaign on a positive note.

With that in mind, football.london's Spurs correspondent Alasdair Gold gave his thoughts on some of the big talking points at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium right now during a Q&A session with fans on Thursday when he was asked questions on topics ranging from future transfer targets to Jose Mourinho's best XI and formation.

Here is what he had to say about what is going on behind the scenes at the north London outfit...

There seems to have been a few links to Coutinho over the last couple of months. Is there any truth in this or just paper talk?

Alasdair Gold says: "I feel like that was an obvious link with his old manager Pochettino at the helm at the same time as Lo Celso was being pursued.

"Now, with the money involved at such a tough time, I can't see Spurs committing to a future fee of that size in a position they have bodies in now.

"Barcelona would want an obligation to buy in any loan after what happened at Bayern."

If the Premier League allows 5 substitutions until the end of the season, will the likes of Troy Parrott get minutes off the bench?

Alasdair Gold says: "You'd hope so.

"Much depends on how much he impresses Mourinho during these weeks before the season resumes, if it does.

"The Spurs boss likes to make a point and if he still feels the young Irishman isn't ready then he won't hesitate to show that and Parrott has to get on the bench in the first place with a fully fit set of attacking options."

Do you think/have information that Spurs have no money and will focus on cheap deals(swaps, free transfers etc)?

Alasdair Gold says: "Right now as it stands, there's a massive hole in finances so yes there's no sizeable transfer budget.

"What happens next with TV money and lost receipts will define whether that continues to be the case, hence why there's been no agreement with the players to cut/defer their wages yet.

"Hopefully today's meeting and the talk of a June 17 start will have brought some answers."

How many signings do you think is realistic for Tottenham in the next window?

Alasdair Gold says: "It depends who they move on in terms of how many come in.

"Positions-wise, a RB, DM and another striker are key and a decision will have to be made on another goalkeeper if Brandon Austin and Alfie Whiteman are deemed not ready yet to fill the gap left when Michel Vorm's contract expires again.

"Spurs could lose two CBs, but with Tanganga's emergence & Dier they may decide to concentrate elsewhere."

Are we still interested in Haaland?

Alasdair Gold says: "Everyone in world football is interested in him. Tottenham would not win a battle for his services or be able to afford him right now.

"He's a terrific young player."

Who do you feel best fits Spurs? (Meunier, Willian or Fraser)

Alasdair Gold says: "Meunier fits a need and Willian brings a winning mentality and understanding of what Mourinho wants from players.

"Fraser I can see the logic in as a free transfer but I'd question how necessary he is with all the options in attacking midfield positions. Dzyuba at Zenit is a big striker Spurs looked at in January and makes sense as well.

"The problem is everyone will be battling for free transfers."

What do you see being the formation and XI now everyone is fit?

Alasdair Gold says: "Hi Jonny, the way Mourinho was talking before everything stopped, he seemed to be hinting towards a 4-3-3 with Harry Kane feeding off speedy wingers on either side.

"Where Dele Alli fits into that is another thing.

"It could be a battle between him and Ndombele to play alongside Lo Celso and in front of a DM. Does that get the best out of Alli? Probably not."
