Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has said that the club have appealed the red card shown to forward Son Heung-min after he was sent off in their 2-0 defeat against Chelsea on Sunday for kicking out at Antonio Rudiger.
The 62nd-minute incident came after a Video Assistant Referee review deemed Son to have committed a red card offence in lashing out at Rudiger, who had conceded a foul in tackling the South Korea international.
With Son dismissed for violent conduct, the 27-year-old will serve an automatic three-match ban unless Spurs can successfully argue the case for the suspension to be reduced, or overturned completely. As it stands, Son will miss the upcoming Premier League games against Brighton, Norwich and Southampton, which would rule him out of action until the new year.
Mourinho confirmed that the club have already appealed the decision, and the Portuguese stressed his desire not to see his star forward punished for what he felt was a poor decision.
"I hope Son is not punished five times,” Mourinho said. "One time was the foul that Rudiger did on him. The second is to be sent off.
"The third would be not to play against Brighton. The fourth not to play against Norwich and the fifth not to play against Southampton.
"So I think to be punished twice is enough."
