Tottenham and Swansea City fans spot poignant Gareth Bale and Joe Rodon moment in Wales win

Amid the euphoria of Wales storming to Nations League promotion, a poignant moment took place.

Rob Page's Wales side produced a stunning display to thrash Finland 3-1 and win their group, turning out arguably their most complete performance in some time.

It was an evening which saw the likes of Daniel James and Harry Wilson shine, but, importantly for Wales and Tottenham Hotspur, Gareth Bale looked something close to back to his best.

The Wales skipper produced a stellar assist for Wilson, who scored the first goal, before firing off a number of troubling shots at will.

But it was on the hour when supporters noticed an exchange between Bale and his club team-mate Joe Rodon which has filled both Spurs and Swansea City fans with pride.

Bale, who was making way for Tom Lawrence, made a beeline towards 23-year-old Rodon as he exited the pitch and slipped the captain's arm band over his arm to pass on captaincy duties to the centre-back for the remainder of the match.

Rodon was largely superb against the Finns, ironically his only blemish came shortly after being handed the captaincy when he afforded Teemu Pukki too much space and the Norwich marksman halved the deficit with an emphatic finish. Kieffer Moore restored the two-goal cushion not long after, though.

But, barring that blip, Rodon showed once again what a class act he is with and without the ball – and that has been the case for both club and country for quite some time and is something Tottenham fans will look forward to seeing in years to come.

The Bale-Rodon exchange did not go unnoticed, though, that is for sure.

Rodon, a product of the Swansea academy, is adored by supporters back in his hometown and they flocked to Twitter in their droves to express their pride.

Joe's brother Sam posted the video clip of the exchange with the caption 'Incredible' and fans responded with their own take on the former Swansea star captaining his country.

"Awesome Sam boy very proud of this one," Anthony Wright wrote.

"Amazing mate. Proud moment for you all," Sam Rose-Brown said.

Josh Murphy replied: "That is some achievement mate. Bet your all buzzing with him class."

While Dylan Jones added: "Class act Joe Rodon...very impressed."

"He’ll captain Wales many times in the future I think," Steve Hill commented.

Huw Williams wrote: "Amazing pal. Proud Swans fan."

Ander Maddern weighed in with: "He’s going to be a great Wales captain and servant for many years to come. Cardiff supporter saying this."

Both Rodon and 20-year-old Ethan Ampadu have been tipped to take on the Wales captaincy down the line, meaning the Red Wall can rest assured that the future is certainly in capable hands.

But the figurative passing of the torch between two Spurs players — one who has been there, done that and got the T-shirt and the other who is really just starting out on his footballing journey — will doubtless have brought a smile not only to supporters in Wales, but a section of fans up in north London, too.
