Tottenham 3 Dortmund 0: Jan Vertonghen hails second-half performance on 'special' Champions League night

Jan Vertonghen praised Tottenham's second-half performance as the hosts claimed an emphatic first-leg victory over Borussia Dortmund on a "special" Champions League last-16 night at Wembley.

Mauricio Pochettino's side will be heavy favourites to reach the quarter-finals of Europe's elite club competition for the first time since 2011 after beating the Bundesliga leaders 3-0 on what could be their last European outing at the home of English football.

After a tense opening 45 minutes in which Dortmund played some excellent football, Tottenham took the initiative after the interval as Heung-min Son volleyed home his 11th goal in 12 matches before further efforts from Vertonghen and substitute Fernando Llorente.

Vertonghen, operating as a left wing-back with Ben Davies sidelined and Danny Rose only fit enough for the bench, claimed an assist in addition to his 83rd-minute strike and drew special plaudits for a particularly accomplished display.

Speaking after the game, the versatile Belgian defender hailed Spurs' turnaround following the break.

"They looked very strong and had the better of the game but in the second half we were able to turn it around," he told BT Sport.

"They dropped off a bit then that early goal in the second half helped. We had the confidence to keep going.

"It was [my first goal] since the first game this season and I had to wait for goal line technology then so I was happy that I could just go [to celebrate this time].

"It was at Wembley too in the Champions League so it was special. It was one of those nights.

"We were able to keep them quiet in the second half and they weren't able to be clinical. The game changed in the second half definitely."
