Tottenham 2 PSV 1: Captain Harry Kane gives Spurs a Champions League lifeline with late double

Harry Kane scored twice to inspire Tottenham to a comeback 2-1 win at home to PSV Eindhoven which keeps alive Spurs' hopes of progressing to the Champions League knockout stages.

Luuk de Jong, who had netted the equaliser in the reverse fixture in late October, put PSV ahead in only the second minute with his header from a corner kick to look to condemn Spurs to an early exit from Europe's premier competition.

PSV goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet was in superb form as he made several saves to deny Spurs until the 78th minute when substitute Fernando Llorente set up captain Kane, who finished from close range, before the striker netted again with just a minute left onthe clock.

The win moves Tottenham into third place in Group B on four points, meaning they can still go through to the knockout rounds of the Champions League but will need results over Inter Milan and Barcelona to do so.

A 2-2 draw away to PSV in late October had meant that Spurs needed to win or hope Inter didn't beat Barcelona in order to keep alive their hopes of progressing past the group stages.

With Hugo Lloris serving a suspension for the red card he received in the reverse fixture, Paulo Gazzaniga was preferred in goal over Michel Vorm.

But the Argentine could do little when De Jong got away from Dele Alli and Toby Alderweireld to head in Gaston Pereiro's corner kick in just the second minute.

The goal seemed to spur the hosts into action and Angelino was needed to clear off the line a cheeky flick from Alli that came to within inches of restoring parity for Tottenham.

After a hectic start to the Group B clash, the pace of the match slowed down although Harry Kane's curling shot, which PSV goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet claimed in the 21st minute, and Lucas Moura's solo run which nearly resulted in a goal but for some last-ditch defending from the visitors a minute later did get the home fans applauding.

But the applause turned to frustration not long afterwards after Zoet denied Christian Eriksen and Alli in quick succession before pulling out a one-handed stop to keep out the latter's close-range effort in the 36th minute.

Tottenham emerged from the break much better than they had ended the first half, yet their inability to test PSV's defence resulted in Pochettino turning to Erik Lamela to provide some creativity and inspiration in attack.

He played his part as Spurs began to throw everything at their competitors and, after Mauricio Pochettino sent on Fernando Llorente, the hosts got the goals they were looking for.

Llorente set up Kane for the equaliser in the 78th minute before Ben Davies' cross was headed toward goal by Kane, which took a slight deflection on its way in to secure a comeback victory for Tottenham - which hands them hope of recovering from their poor start in this season's Champions League to at least make it to the round of 16
