Tottenham 1 Man City 0: Heung-min Son seals famous Champions League win after Harry Kane injury

Heung-min Son struck a late winner to hand Tottenham a vital 1-0 win over Manchester City in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

The Korean fired past Ederson with just 10 minutes left to settle a scrappy affair at the New Tottenham Stadium and give Mauricio Pochettino's side a slender advantage going into the second leg on April 17.

Pep Guardiola sprung a surprise with his team selection, leaving Kevin De Bruyne and Leroy Sane on the bench while Bernardo Silva missed out entirely due to a thigh strain.

It was one of the players of the season, Raheem Sterling, who made the first chance of the game after just a minute of play. The winger ghosted in behind Kieran Trippier and threaded in David Silva, who shot into the side netting.

Tottenham, buoyed by the deafening noise from the home support, had started well but all of their hard work in the early moments was about to be undone.

Sterling cut inside from the left and beat three players with a mazy run before shooting from the edge of the area. The ball hit Danny Rose and went out for a corner, but VAR officials had spotted an infringement and, on the replay, showed the full-back had indeed handled the ball.

After a minute's deliberation, referee Bjorn Kuipers pointed to the spot, much to Tottenham's fury. Up stepped Sergio Aguero but the Argentine made it far too obvious where he was going and Hugo Lloris palmed away his spot-kick. After the save, Tottenham would have felt that justice was served.

Spurs responded well to the penalty incident and this time it was the referee's decision which went in their favour when Alli was fouled, play continued and Harry Kane's snapshot was saved by Ederson.

After a tepid affair in the first half, both sides came out of the blocks and it could have been 1-1 within three minutes of the restart, with both Sterling and Son going close.

Spurs were dealt a massive blow when Kane injured his ankle on the touchline and limped down the tunnel, and was replaced by Lucas Moura.

City began to come forward more with about quarter of an hour left but then came the game-changing moment - and it went against the run of play.

Son was played in by Eriksen but the Korean's touch was poor. He managed to keep it by a matter of inches and that was important, as he skipped past Fabian Delph to fire under Ederson from 12 yards out.

The visitors tried to respond, with Guardiola bizarrely sending on De Bruyne and Sane with just two minutes left, but it proved a fruitless tactic as Spurs held on for a crucial victory. Still, it's all to play for at the Etihad Stadium in eight days' time.
