Dele Alli's late strike salvaged a point for Tottenham as they drew 1-1 with Watford at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Abdoulaye Doucoure gave the Hornets a shock lead after just seven minutes after some shodding defending from the hosts.
Heung-min Son, as a substitute on half time, hit the crossbar moments after coming on as Spurs searched for an equaliser.
Dele took advantage of some poor defending from the Hornets to stab home five minutes from time and after confusion with VAR, the goal was allowed to stand despite hitting Dele's arm as Mauricio Pochettino's side rescued a point.
The Argentinian coach made seven changes to the side that were humbled 3-0 by Brighton a fortnight ago, with Heung-min Son and Tanguy Ndombele left on the bench.
But it was the same old story for the north Londoners and they were behind after just seven minutes thanks to a slick move from Watford.
Craig Dawson found Daryl Janmaat out on the right with a fine 50-yard diagonal pass and the Dutchman's cross was tapped home superbly by Doucoure. Questions had to be asked about how Spurs were so exposed at the back.
The hosts were dominating the ball but struggled to penetrate the visitors' defence and Dele was the only Tottenham player to find the target.
Watford then felt they should have had a penalty - and certainly had a good case. Jan Vertonghen brought down Gerard Deulofeu with a clumsy challenge in the box but despite the replay showing contact, VAR let the Belgian off the hook.
With his side trailing, Pochettino sent on Son at the interval for the booked Davinson Sanchez, switching to a 4-2-3-1.
The Korean so nearly made an instant impact, racing past Craig Cathcart only to smash against the underside of the bar - and the replay showed Ben Foster got the slightest of touches on it.
Watford went up the other end and should've doubled their advantage when Deulofeu unselfishly found Roberto Pereyra but the Argentine's casual effort was blocked by Toby Alderwerield.
Tottenham's encouraging start to the half fizzled out somewhat and it was Watford who looked more like adding to their lead rather than giving it up. Deulofeu rolled wide from inside the area before Janmaat, with four on two, fluffed his lines on his weaker foot.
The home side began to ramp up the pressure and Dele should have done better after a pinpoint cross from Lamela but the midfielder failed to make any contact with the ball.
The 23-year-old made amends with just five minutes left, controlling the ball past Foster and finished home from a tight angle. VAR checked the goal for handball but after the referee allowed the ball, the screen inside the stadium said it had been ruled out.
Sure enough, the goal was allowed to stand as Dele, who hadn't enjoyed his best game in a Tottenham shirt, finally stepped up to save a late point for struggling Spurs.
