'Totally disgusted' - vandals slammed for defacing memorial by River Clyde

Vandals have defaced a memorial by the River Clyde leaving those who built the statue 'totally disgusted'.

The tribute to the Blockade Runners to Spain, which was unveiled just a few weeks ago, was installed after 'fifteen years of hard work' by the Glasgow Shipping Branch of the RMT.

The memorial honours British seafarers who broke the fascist blockade of ports during the Spanish Civil War between 1936 and 1939.

Graffiti on the structure includes: "F*** The 12th", "HH", "UC06", "F***, UB07", "FK 55" "10" and "Celtic FC".

RMT - the union for transport workers - have Tweeted a photo of the defaced statue, expressing their frustration and disappointment.

The Tweet read: "After so much hard work by so many wonderful people and the excitement earlier this year unveiling this fantastic memorial to the Blockade Runners we were totally disgusted to to see this vandalism today."

Upon the unveiling of the memorial, on March 2, RMT described: "The new memorial on the Clyde dedicated to the seafarers who broke Franco’s blockade of Republican ports.

"Thirty-five merchant navy and eight Royal Navy seafarers died and scores were injured on vessels attacked by submarine, naval and aerial forces under fascist control between 1936-38.

"This memorial to seafarers will stand as renewed testimony to the importance of international solidarity in the face of fascist aggression."

Providing comment to Glasgow Live, a branch spokesperson today said: "As a trade union branch we are so disappointed that this has happened.

"I don’t think that the graffiti is isolated to the memorial.

"If anything positive can be taken from this we hope that it educates fellow Glaswegians who the Blockade Runners were and the sacrifices that so many made."

RMT Glasgow Shipping are to contact Police Scotland in relation to the incident.

The statue, on the Clydeside, is found next to Glasgow Bridge, on Jamaica Street.
