The NSW Rural Fire Service has put a Total Fire Ban in place for the Greater Hunter for September 25, one week from the official beginning of the bushfire danger period.
The Greater Hunter was included along with many areas in the state's north-east that were subject to the ban on Friday, with the fire danger rating classified as very high from the Hunter to the far north coast.
The ban means no open fires or activities that could spark a blaze are allowed to take place.
Total Fire Bans are declared in hot, windy, dry conditions in an effort to reduce damaging blazes from starting and spreading.
While some locations began their bushfire danger period early this year, the remainder will enter the fire season on October 1.
