Tory-turned-Lib Dem Sam Gyimah lands directorship role at Goldman Sachs

GOLDMAN Sachs has hired Sam Gyimah, formerly one of the few black ministers of state, as a non-executive director, the Evening Standard has learned.

The former minister for universities, science and education rebelled against the no-deal Brexit and had the Tory whip removed last year, going on to stand unsuccessfully for the Liberal Democrats in Kensington in the election.

Goldman sources said he would bring “a diversity of perspective” on innovation, ESG and impact investing.

He started his career at Goldman in corporate finance.

Gyimah will be a non-executive director of Goldman Sachs International, the London-based arm of the investment banking giant.

Prior to entering politics he was an angel investor in numerous early stage businesses.

At Goldman, he first worked on UK corporate finance an M&A advisory transactions, before joining the equities business.

His appointment follows that of fellow putative new-Lib Dem candidate Chuka Umunna’s post at communications giant Edelman, where, like Gyimah, he will be advising on ESG issues.

Umunna defected from Labour to stand for the Lib Dems in Westminster.

Sajid Javid, former chancellor, was hired by JPMorgan, where former Prime Minister Tony Blair is retained as an adviser.
