Tory press office Twitter rebrands as fact checking account amid huge backlash

The Twitter said it would be fact checking Labour (Picture: ITV)

The Conservative Party's official press office Twitter account sparked fury as it rebranded itself as a fact checking service during Tuesday's general election debate.

CCHQ's Twitter renamed itself "factcheckUK" and said it would be fact checking Labour throughout tonight's election debate.

Fact-checking organisation Full Fact criticised the Conservatives for changing their Twitter handle for the ITV debate.

It tweeted: “It is inappropriate and misleading for the Conservative press office to rename their twitter account ‘factcheckUK’ during this debate.

“Please do not mistake it for an independent fact checking service such as @FullFact, @FactCheck or @FactCheckNI.”

Speaking to The Evening Standard the group said they had reported the Conservative Party press office's account to Twitter.

A spokesman said: "We have raised it with Twitter.

"Obviously, it is a verified account and we do not think that that is right."

The Labour Party said in a statement: "The Conservatives laughable attempt to dupe those watching the ITV debate by renaming their Twitter account shows you can't trust a word they say."

After the debate the name of the CCHQ Twitter account switched back from factcheckuk to the Conservative Party press office.

The Conservative Party has been contacted for comment.
