Tory press office rebrands Twitter account as 'factcheck UK' amid huge backlash

The Conservative Party have been blasted for rebranding their press office Twitter account "factcheck UK" especially for tonight's election debate.

Afterwards they told how they would be fact-checking Labour throughout tonight's election debate.

The move was met with derision from the likes of comedian Ralf Little - who changed his Twitter name to "Conservative Press Office" in response.

The Royle Family star then began tweeting about Jeremy Corbyn having won the televised ITV debate that pitted the two leaders for the first time together on TV.

Even right-wing commentator Julia Hartley-Brewer tweeted to say “Ha. @CCHQPress asked for this..”

Fact-checking organisation Full Fact criticised the Conservatives for changing their Twitter handle to “factcheckUK” especially for the ITV debate.

It tweeted: “It is inappropriate and misleading for the Conservative press office to rename their twitter account ‘factcheckUK’ during this debate.

“Please do not mistake it for an independent fact checking service such as @FullFact, @FactCheck or @FactCheckNI.”

Meanwhile The Labour Party said in a statement: "The Conservatives laughable attempt to dupe those watching the ITV debate by renaming their Twitter account shows you can't trust a word they say."

Within minutes of the debate ending the CCHQ Twitter account switched back from a fact checking account to the Conservative press office.
