Tory plot to topple Theresa May deepens as MPs demand she quit as soon as TODAY

The Tory plot to topple Theresa May has deepened after a senior MP demanded she quit as soon as TODAY.

Parliament is returning to a storm after its Easter break as scheming MPs work up a new plan to remove their leader.

Tory MPs are furious at the Prime Minister for delaying Brexit to October 31 and entering talks with Labour that could lead to a 'softer' deal.

Now there are open calls for her to name a date for her departure - or face another no confidence vote by her MPs in mid-June.

Currently she can't face such a leadership challenge until December - because she has a year's grace after winning the last one in December 2018.

But MPs are now demanding the party cuts this one-year rule to a 'six-month rule' - allowing them to force a leadership challenge from June 12.

That would leave Mrs May facing a moment of danger after the local elections on May 2 and EU elections on May 23, where Tories are expected to be hit hard.

Officers of the 1922 Committee, which represents Tory backbenchers, are due to meet in Westminster tonight to discuss a possible rule change.

And one officer, Tory MP Nigel Evans, said Theresa May should announce she is quitting today.

Mr Evans told the BBC the Conservatives need new leadership and that the process "can't start soon enough".

He added: "To be honest I would be delighted if she announced today she was announcing her resignation.

"We could then have an orderly election to choose a new leader of the Conservative Party.

"I believe the only way we're going to break this impasse properly is if we have fresh leadership of the Conservative Party.

"If there was an announcement today by the Prime Minister then of course we could start the process straight away."

The Ribble Valley MP said he had reflected on the situation over the Easter break and said the "severe problems" over Brexit meant Mrs May had to go "as soon as possible".

A Survation poll at the weekend found 40% of Tory councillors are set to vote for Nigel Farage's Brexit Party in EU elections on May 23.

And a separate vote of no confidence in Mrs May - albeit not a binding one - was triggered by 70 local Tory association chairs.

Mr Evans said: "I hope she does accept the fact the call for her resignation now is growing into a clamour."

When asked when Mrs May should step down, he added: "Preferably today.

"We need fresh leadership of the Conservative Party as quickly as possible - it can't start soon enough."

David Lidington, Gavin Barwell and Julian Smith are expected to meet members of Jeremy Corbyn's top team in a bid to thrash out a Brexit compromise plan.

Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay is expected to meet his Labour opposite Keir Starmer in separate talks.

And Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell is hoping to meet his rival Philip Hammond after PMQs on Wednesday.

Yet prospects looked bleak - as weeks of talks already happened before Easter with no breakthrough.

Despite the urgency, it is understood the Prime Minister had no face-to-face talks scheduled with Jeremy Corbyn .

A Labour source told the Mirror the two sides are still "a long way apart" and that they were waiting on an offer from the Government.

They added: “This week will be crucial to see if we have any chance of agreement.”

Meanwhile despite the Brexiteers' new plot to oust the PM, Tories are still deeply split on whether she should go.

Minister Rory Stewart today warned going into a leadership battle with Brexit unresolved “would tear politics apart”.

“She is our best hope”, he added.

Splits also appeared to exist on the executive of the 1922 Committee itself.

ITV last night reported that its chairman, Graham Brady, is set to meet the PM this week "to give her a date for her departure.”

But the Sun reported that a rule change will only happen if 30% of Tory MPs submit a letter of no confidence.

That's double the 15% (47 MPs) that would usually be needed to trigger a leadership challenge to the PM.
