A Tory MSP has launched his own campaign to save the First Glasgow 31 bus through East Kilbride.
Politicians from all parties slammed the bus operator for permanently removing the service from Carmunnock to the town through Stewartfield.
This section was suspended amid the coronavirus pandemic but First confirmed it wouldn’t return stating the route was “no longer viable” nor profitable due to low usage.
Now Graham Simpson MSP, who ran a campaign back in 2013 when he served as a councillor in the Stewartfield area, which saw the lifeline service saved, is once again rallying the troops.

The 31 is the only route serving Stewartfield in East Kilbride and will now only run between Carmunnock and Glasgow.
Mr Simpson, shadow local government minister, said: “The 31 bus is a lifeline service for East Kilbride residents and serves a substantial community.
“Bus services are vital for combating loneliness and ensuring elderly and vulnerable can get about easily. It’s also some residents only means to getting to work.
“These proposals were ditched before. Several years ago we fought to save the 31 and we must do so again.
“Using the excuse of coronavirus shouldn’t be used to stop this vital bus route.
“I’ve started a petition to send a message - like we did last time - that we want this bus to stay. Please visit my website to voice your support at www.grahamsimpson.org.uk
“Stewartfield needs a bus service, it’s as simple as that.”
And the Tory MSP has written to South Lanarkshire Council’s chief executive calling for a meeting over the axing of the First 31 bus through Stewartfield.
His petition has secured more than 150 signatures, but Mr Simpson said only a collabarative approach getting SLC, SPT, politicians and First around the table would bring results.

His call for a meeting with SLC chief executive Cleland Sneddon is backed by the town’s SNP MSP Linda Fabiani.
A council spokesman said the letter is “under consideration”.
Meanwhile, SPT – who are responsible for coordinating regional transport – say they are working closely with all operators to try ensure services remain where they are most needed.
A petition launched my Labour councillors Joe Fagan and Monique McAdams has already secured more than 2000 signatures
