Tory MPs voice fury at sleaze chaos and demand apology from Boris Johnson

Frustrated Tory MPs from the 2019 intake expressed their disappointment over Boris Johnson's' handling of the sleaze scandal.

Aaron Bell, the Tory MP for Newcastle-under-Lyme, said some Tories in the '109 group' a nickname for the '19 intake have been “beating themselves up” about siding with the Government.

Mr Bell who opted to rebel on the matter, said his colleagues were put in an “invidious position” by the Government.

“It churns you up beforehand and leaves you a little shell-shocked afterwards. Perhaps next time it will be easier.”

And Tory MP Mark Fletcher, a member of the Standards Committee, urged people to not paint all Tories with the same brush as he insisted many are "desperate" to stay within the rules.

Mr Fletcher told the Commons he would vote against the bill if he had to today.

“I think that two years here is more than enough to know the difference between right and wrong," Mr Fletcher added.

He urged the Government to avoid ordering Tory MPs to vote a certain way in future matters on standards, before thanking politicians on all sides for checking up on him following his decision to rebel.

Their remarks appeared to show a deepening divide within the Tory party, with newer MPs expressing their fury over senior member's handling of the Owen Paterson case.

The Standards Committee had recommended former Tory cabinet minister Mr Paterson should be suspended from Parliament for 30 days after committing an “egregious” breach of a ban on paid lobbying by MPs.

But Mr Paterson quit Parliament before he could be suspended.

Mr Bell even quoted a WhatsApp message sent by Tory MP Jill Mortimer, who was elected to represent Hartlepool in May.

He told the House: “She said ‘this was a colossal misjudgement, it should not have been whipped, you should have been allowed to vote with your conscience on this’.

“I couldn’t agree more and I hope the Treasury bench is listening. Let us return to the convention where House business is not whipped.”

And former Tory chief whip Mark Harper urged Mr Johnson to demonstrate leadership and apologise in the Commons.

He said: “I hope ministers can rule that out, I think that would be a mistake and most regrettable.

“They (backbenchers) deserve that decisions are well thought through and soundly based and if, on occasion, as on this occasion… if the team captain gets it wrong, then I think he should come and apologise to the public and to this House, that’s the right thing to do in terms of demonstrating leadership.”

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer slammed the PM for "running scared".

He told the Commons: "This week he had the chance to clean up, to apologise to the country and finally accept that the rules apply to him and his friends.

“But instead of stepping up he has hidden away. Instead of clearing up his mess he has left his side knee-deep in it. Instead of leading from the front, he has cowered away. He is not a serious leader and the joke isn’t funny any more.”

Instead of making the apology on behalf of his party, Mr Johnson was pictured walking brazenly through a Northumbria hospital, maskless next to NHS staff who all wore face coverings.

Number 10 insist Mr Johnson was following the rules and that he could not make it back to London in time for the debate.
