Tory MP Richard Holden fined £100 for dropping cigarette butt outside County Durham election count

A County Durham MP has been fined £100 for dropping a cigarette butt outside an election count.

Richard Holden, who represents North West Durham, was given a fixed penalty notice outside the Louisa Centre in Stanley on Saturday.

It is understood Mr Holden was spotted by a council warden dropping the butt after leaving the building during the count.

He was issued the fine for the offence of littering.

Ian Hoult, Durham County Council’s neighbourhood protection manager, said: “We can confirm one of our neighbourhood wardens observed two people littering outside the Louisa Centre, Stanley, during Saturday’s local election count and issued them both with fixed penalty notices.”

In June last year, Mr Holden posted a tweet slamming litter louts, saying he was “fed up” with seeing rubbish.

He asked: “What sort of yob just tosses it out the window?”

Mr Holden has been contacted for comment.
