A Tory MP who lives in a firetrap block of flats voted down law changes that would spare his neighbours £40,000 bills for repair work.
Chris Clarkson, 38, has had pleas to help save 550 leaseholders from potentially crippling costs – and now faces being hit in the pocket himself for siding with the Government.
Neighbours at the Spectrum site in Salford, Gtr Manchester, claim he “flatly refused” to fight for them.
One said: “When Chris moved here in 2008 he wanted people to support him to be a councillor. Now we’re asking for his help he’s nowhere.”
The eight blocks failed fire safety tests done after 72 people died in the 2017 Grenfell inferno, which was blamed in part on the tower’s cladding.
Spectrum got the lowest possible ranking due to missing fire breaks, flammable insulation and insufficient cavity barriers.
Mr Clarkson, MP for Heywood and Middleton since 2019, joined 322 MPs who last Monday voted against amendments to stop building owners passing on the costs of fixing defects.
But he denied refusing to help neighbours, saying parliamentary protocol stops him intervening as Salford is the constituency of Labour ’s Rebecca Long-Bailey.
He added: “I’ve directed people who I’m not in a position to help to the person who can help them.
"I voted the way I have because I think the Government has taken the right remediation action. No-one will have to pay more than £50 a month.”
