Tory MP launches campaign to get portrait of the Queen in every home in Britain

A Tory MP has launched what she describes as a "unifying" campaign to get a portrait of the Queen into every British home and workplace.

Joy Morrissey, MP for Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire, has launched the initiative along with the British Monarchists Society, of which she is a patron.

Launching the campaign in a tweet in which she was pictured holding a portrait of a young Queen Elizabeth II the politician said: “I am proud to be launching a national campaign with the British Monarchists Society to put a picture of Her Majesty in every home, company and institution that would like one. It is time to rediscover our pride in being British!”

She added that she will be writing to Prime Minister Boris Johnson asking him to carefully consider the decision.

The Beaconsfield MP wrote: "I think this is a wonderful, patriotic and unifying campaign for our country. I will be writing to the Prime Minister to ask him to give it careful consideration and looking for opportunities to discuss further in Parliament."

Her tweet came in for flak with some replies suggesting money could be better spent on structural issues within the schools or meals for those in need.

Her campaign comes after the UK Government asked schools to support One Britain One Nation Day on June 25, which aims "to create, a strong, fair, harmonious and a proud British nation, celebrating patriotism and respect for all our people".

The day includes a song written especially for the event by primary school children.

The Department for Education tweeted their support for the event, stating: "We're encouraging schools across the UK to celebrate One Britain One Nation Day on 25 June, when children can learn about our shared values of tolerance, kindness, pride and respect."
