Tory MP Johnny Mercer told 'I hope you hang yourself' after no deal Brexit vote

A Conservative MP has said a constituent told him "I hope you hang yourself" following yesterday's no deal Brexit vote.

Johnny Mercer, a Conservative representing Plymouth Moor View, voted against the motion ruling out no deal as a possibility on Wednesday.

The next morning the 37-year-old former army officer shared the abusive message which was allegedly sent over Facebook on his Twitter profile.

It said: "You're a dirty POS, you're not democratic just being bribed I bet. As I am a veteran you disgust me. I hope you hang yourself."

Mr Mercer, who has been his constituency's MP since 2015, did not send a lengthy response and said a simple "thanks" to the person who sent it.

Alongside the screenshot of the message, Mr Mercer said: "I actually voted the way this guy asked me to. The madness of BREXIT means he will figure this out at some point today and call me a 'hero'. Who would be an MP example #562."

In a surprise move, the Commons voted 312 to 308 - a majority of four - in favour of the proposal tabled by former Conservative chairman Dame Caroline Spelman to take no-deal off the table under any circumstance.

The vote was later confirmed by a more emphatic 321 votes to 278.

This trumped a Government motion from Mrs May that would have rejected no-deal on the scheduled date of March 29 but left it on the table for other times.

The abuse to Mr Mercer comes amid a recent spate of threatening messages sent towards MPs due to their actions or voting.

Nick Boles was sent an email in January saying "your days are f****** numbered traitor! Prepare to die" after he backed an amendment to reduce the Government's powers to make tax changes if there were a no-deal Brexit scenario, the Sun reported.

Former Labour MP and now Independent Group member Joan Ryan received abusive messages which were anti-Semitic and said she should be "set on fire", according to the Mail on Sunday.

Other MPs have been subject to abuse over social media over the Brexit debate and also in person outside of Parliament.
