Tory MP Johnny Mercer’s wife sent soiled nappy in post as he warns: This is 2020 politics in Britain

A Tory MP today revealed how his wife had been subjected to horrific abuse after being sent a soiled nappy in the post.

Johnny Mercer, MP for Plymouth Moor View, said his wife had been sent the item in a tracked package.

Sharing graphic pictures of the unwelcome package, he tweeted on Tuesday morning: “I publicise this stuff not because I want sympathy - I’m very privileged.

“But I do think people should be aware of what getting involved in politics is really like in 2020 Britain.”

Affixed to the dirty diaper was a note reading: “Better check and see what your husband has been up to…”

Mr Mercer explained: “This was mailed to my wife (not me) this morning. Tracked as well.”

Twitter users were quick to condemn the act, with Good Morning Britain’s political producer Anne Alexander writing: “Good grief. This is appalling.”

The Daily Mirror’s political editor Pippa Crerar commented: “Horrible. If it’s tracked hopefully you can find out who sent it?”

But another user added less optimistically: “These people never have the courage of their convictions and leave their contact details so they are held accountable for their actions.”

Comedian Dom Jolly observed with punning candour: “That is s***.”
