Tory MP Geoffrey Cox rakes in £33k from second job weeks after being sacked

Millionaire Tory Geoffrey Cox raked in £33,000 in outside earnings on top of his MPs salary in the space two weeks within a month of being sacked as Boris Johnson ’s Attorney General.

Mr Cox left the government on February 13 in the PM’s first reshuffle since the election.

But he returned to work as a barrister on March 1, squeezing in two weeks of lucrative work on his second job before Britain was forced into coronavirus lockdown.

By March 13 he had performed 35 hours of work at an average rate of almost £1,000 an hour.

He registered a further payment of £333 plus VAT from a separate firm, for legal services he performed in 2015, but only received on March 20.

Before being made Attorney General by Theresa May, Mr Cox was famous for being Westminster’s highest paid MP.

In the 12 months to June 2018, he registered £487,043 for his work as a QC.

While he was a backbencher, Mr Cox hit headlines after a string of expenses controversies.

He was forced to apologise after neglecting to declare £400,000 of outside earnings as a QC.

He blamed a member of staff for failing to register hundreds of hours of work on top of his MP's salary.

And he sparked fury while he was the highest paid MP for submitting an unsuccessful expenses claim for 49p to cover a pint of milk.

He later successfully claimed £95 for a fridge in which to keep his milk.
