A Tory MP has claimed that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle should lose their royal status after the release of their Netflix documentary.

Bob Seely, Conservative MP for the Isle of Wight, said he would present a Private Members’ Bill to the House of Commons which he claims could give the Privy Council powers to downgrade their status.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex currently retain their HRH – His Royal Highness and Her Royal Highness – prefix, but they have both said they will no longer “actively use” the titles.

Mr Seely told MailOnline the couple should “voluntarily give up their titles” in the wake of the claims made in the documentary, adding: “If they don't I think there are various people trying to put down Bills helping them to do that.”

The legislation would amend the 1917 Titles Deprivation Act, according to the Mail. This was originally introduced to allow for the stripping of royal titles for those who supported rival powers in the First World War.

The Standard has contacted representatives of the Sussexes for comment.

It comes after the first three episodes of Harry and Meghan’s tell-all Netflix documentary were released on Thursday. They begin with the Duchess of Sussex accusing the media of wanting to “destroy” her and claiming “salacious” stories were “planted” by the press. They also accused the royals of having a “huge level of unconscious bias”.

The duchess also described her first meeting with the Prince and Princess of Wales, saying she was surprised at the “formality” of the royal family behind closed doors.

“I’ve always been a hugger, I didn’t realise that that is really jarring for a lot of Brits,” she said, revealing she was dressed down in ripped jeans and barefoot.

Meanwhile, a row has also broken out after a senior palace source claimed that Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace and members of the family were not approached for comment on content in the series.

However, a Netflix source insisted the communications offices for the King and the Prince of Wales were contacted in advance and given the chance to react to Harry and Meghan’s claims.
