Tory MP calls for new law to make cycle helmets compulsory to reduce brain injuries

An MP has called on the Government to consider making helmets compulsory for cyclists in order to reduce brain injuries.

Bill Grant, Conservative MP for Ayr , Carrick and Cumnock, said more people were surviving brain injuries than ever, but more could be done.

During a debate on acquired brain injuries, he told MPs: "Having spent 31 years in the fire service and having attended needless road accidents, can I commend those who invented and installed airbags, for which there is no measure of the number of brain injuries they have reduced."

Grant said it was a Conservative government that introduced the compulsory wearing of seat belts, and crash helmets for motorcyclists, and perhaps this government should now consider it for cyclists .

"Would it be worth considering the compulsory wearing of safety helmets for cyclists, as I'm sure that would reduce brain trauma injuries in the future," he said.
