Tory minister forced to confirm toilets are not his responsibility

A Tory minister has been forced to confirm toilets are not his responsibility.

Well, most of them aren't, anyway.

After announcing all royal parks in London had opened at least one public convenience, Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden was asked when public toilets would be allowed to open in other parts of the country.

"I should emphasise toilets don't actually fall in my ministerial portfolio," he said.

"Aside from the Royal Parks, which is one of DCMS's (the Department for Culture, Media and Sport) arms length bodies."

But he said the Communities department had issued "very clear guidance" to local authorities on the reopening of public toilets.

He added: "And I very much agree with that."

The Government has encouraged local authorities to reopen public toilets "wherever possible."

"We've published guidance to help operators ensure facilities are safe where they are open including increasing the cleaning of touch points," a Department of Housing, Communities and Local Government spokeswoman said.

But a Local Government Association spokesman said people should "not assume toilets should be open and plan their journeys and outdoor activities accordingly."
