Tory mayor hopeful Shaun Bailey: Fire brigade head must go, we need a change

Tory mayoral candidate Shaun Bailey has called for the head of the London fire brigade to resign, saying a “cultural change” was needed after the Grenfell Tower disaster.

Mr Bailey echoed calls from some survivors for Dany Cotton to leave her post, despite the fact that she has already announced her retirement in April.

He told LBC radio: “Dany Cotton needs to fall on her sword.”

He said this would signify to Grenfell survivors “that justice will be delivered”.

He added: “We need a cultural change here.

"I think the cultural change needs to start at the top. Dany Cotton needs to go.”

Last week the first report from the official Grenfell inquiry said the brigade’s preparations had been “gravely inadequate”.

It warned that institutional failings within the brigade meant it may not learn from the disaster in June 2017, which killed 72.

A brigade spokesman today said Ms Cotton, who was acting commissioner at the time of the fire, was committed to remaining in her post until April.

Ms Cotton said: “I am committed to doing everything I can to continue making the changes I have been putting in place since the fire.”
