Another MP is standing down after citing abuse and death threats.

Tory MP Mark Lancaster said today’s "angry" Brexit-dominated political climate “bears no resemblance” to when he was first elected in 2005.

The Milton Keynes North MP, signing off his resignation statement on Saturday, wrote: “Finally, as I leave the stage, may I simply offer a plea?

“The politics of today, with all its anger, abuse and in my own case, two threats on my life, is not the politics we want or need for our great country.

“It certainly bears no resemblance to the political arena I entered when first elected in 2005. Nor is it the politics of Milton Keynes.

“We have always been at our best and delivered the most, when we are able to express political disagreements through healthy debate then unite as a community and as a country.

“I hope one day that we can return to such a place.”

It comes after a week in which MPs such as Tory Nicky Morgan and Liberal Democrat Heidi Allen also cited abuse as they announced they are stepping down ahead of the general election.

The Standard also spoke to MPs from across the political spectrum who said they have taken out restraining orders, faced intimidation, or have had to put security measures in their homes.

Labour MP Luke Pollard, who is gay, last week had graffiti daubed on his constituency office which included an anti-gay slur.

Former Conservative MP Anna Soubry, who is now leader of the Independent Group for Change, told BBC Newsnight: “My 85-year-old mother was sent a letter to her home threatening her safety.”

And Liberal Democrat MP Luciana Berger revealed she is not campaigning by herself at night after suffering a barrage of abuse.
