Rory Stewart was the bookies' second favourite to become the next Prime Minister after Monday night's televised debate.
It came as the Tory leadership contest intensified ahead of the second round of voting.
Five of the six contenders faced questions at special hustings in Westminster on Tuesday.
Wednesday's vote between 3 and 5pm will see those who fail to secure 33 supporters eliminated from the contest.
